November
As a first article on this new blog, I will write about a movie that I just finished rewatching. I had seen it before, long ago, and could just remember a few details. It was weird to see the boys as boys, they looked a lot older when I watched it last time! The movie came out in 1989, I hadn’t realised it had been so long. I saw it in the 90s.
I rewatched this movie this month because it fits the dark academia aesthetic… Yes, it is going to be one of these blogs ^^ But not quite. We’ll see ^^ I stumbled upon the whole “aesthetic” concept not so long ago, during the pandemic, and I have to admit, it got me. For example the dark academia thing.
I have the movie in the background for inspiration as I am writing and I just saw Robin Williams in the scene when he is first introduced. He is so young! And that smile! O Captain, my captain! Brilliant performance from Robin Williams, not over the top, touching, loved the character. “Teachers” movies kind of stress me out because I am a teacher myself and would rather not think about work during my free time, but it was worth it.
Dark Academia fits November perfectly, and as I was paying attention to seasonal cues while watching the movie I was not disappointed, it starts during back to school time and ends in the snow, so November being the transitional month between autumn and winter, it was the fitting atmosphere.
Just a side note on the wardrobe: the school uniforms have the greatest muggle coats imaginable! Those hoods! I have a Gryffindor robe-shaped cardigan that resembles the Hellton Prep coat a lot ^^ The scene where they go to the cave for the first time, hoods up in the night, looked awesome!
Also fitting the dark academia theme, a touch of latin, thank you very much 🙂 I live in Germany and here Latin is still a part of the curriculum in many schools. I didn’t go to school here, having arrived here in my early 20s, so this fact is (Beautiful landscape shot just now, distracted me for a moment 🙂) still fascinating to me, every time an acquaintance casually mentions Latin class in a conversation. No regrets, I got to learn Spanish 🙂 and it is never too late for Latin.
That’s it for today! Enjoy November 🙂
